Chapter 3. xfsm

xfsm Main Window

xfsm Main Window

This is the first window you see when you invoke xfsm:

Figure 3-1. xfsm Main Window

Figure 3-1 xfsm Main Window

All other xfsm windows are accessed through this one. The window consists of two parts: the menu bar and the display area. The menu bar provides options for operations on the filesystems shown in the display area. The display area shows you icons for all filesystems on the selected host.

xfsm Menu Bar

The menu bar provides three pulldown menus. Each menu provides a list of options. The menus are called Selected, View, and Help.

xfsm Selected Menu

The Selected menu provides the following options:

New

This option brings up the Create File System dialog. Use this option to create a new filesystem on a disk partition or logical volume.

Mount

This option brings up the Mount File System dialog. Use this option to mount a filesystem on the current system. If no filesystem is selected, a dialog appears to take the parameters of the filesystem to be mounted. If one or more filesystems are selected, a simple dialog appears to confirm the mount operation on the selected filesystem or systems.

Export

This option brings up the Export File Systems dialog. Use this option to select filesystems for export with the optional NFS software.

Remove

This option brings up the Delete File Systems dialog on the selected filesystem. Use this option to select filesystems to be unmounted or unexported. This option does not actually destroy an existing filesystem. To overwrite and destroy a filesystem, use the “ New” option to create a new filesystem over the old one.

Unmount

This option brings up the Unmount File Systems dialog on the selected filesystem. Use this option to unmount a filesystem.

Unexport

This option brings up the Unexport File Systems dialog on the selected filesystem. Use this option to unexport a filesystem previously exported on the optional NFS software.

Get Info

This option brings up a dialog window showing all available information about the selected filesystem or filesystems. This information includes the mount point, disk partitition device name, type of filesystem, mount options, and fsck and dump information.

Quit

This option quits xfsm. A confirmation dialog is displayed and the action must be confirmed before xfsm exits.

The same menu is available by pressing the right-hand mouse button while the cursor is positioned in the display area. The menu items that are active at any given time depend on the filesystem or filesystems selected for operations:

  • If no filesystem is selected, only the “ New,” “Mount,” “Export,” “Unexport,” and “Quit” options are active.

  • If one or more filesystems are selected, all options are active.

You may select a filesystem by clicking the left mouse button with the cursor positioned over the desired icon. You may select multiple filesystems by pressing the left mouse button and dragging a box around the desired group of icons, or by selecting a single icon and then pressing the <Shift> key while selecting additional icons.

xfsm View Menu and Buttons

The View menu provides ways to change the way the information in the xfsm window is presented to you. Except for the “ Search...,”Mount Points,” and “ Device Name” options, the options on this menu correspond to the buttons on the left side of the xfsm window as displayed in Figure 2-2. You can change the view mode with the menu or by clicking on the button of your choice.

The View menu has the following options:

Search...

This option brings up the Search for Filesystems window. Using this window, you can select any host and use xfsm to view the filesystems on that host. Note that the host in question must have the XFS Manager software installed, and must be running the xfsmd daemon to successfully report its filesystem resources.

as Icons

This option directs xfsm to display each filesystem on the host as an icon with the mount point of the filesystem under the icon. Icons are displayed in rows from left to right alphabetically by the mount point pathname. This is the default display.

as List

This option directs xfsm to display each filesystem on the host as a smaller icon with the mount point pathname to the right of the icon. Icons are displayed alphabetically by the mount point pathname in a single column.

as Columns

This option directs xfsm to display each filesystem on the host as a smaller icon with the mount point pathname to the right of the icon. Icons are displayed in as many columns as the width of the window and length of pathnames permits, alphabetically ordered from top to bottom in each column, and by columns from left to right.

Mount Points

This option directs xfsm to use the mount point pathname of the filesystem as its label in the display area. If the filesystem is unmounted, the device name of that filesystem is used.

Device Names

This option directs xfsm to use the device name of the disk partition containing the filesystem as its label in the display area. For NFS-mounted filesystems, the format is: hostname:remote filesystem

Additionally, the xfsm view control offers a “thumb wheel” that you can use to control the size of the icons and filenames in the display. Use the left mouse button to “turn” the thumb wheel up or down to make the icons smaller or larger. At the bottom of the thumb wheel is a button that, when pressed, restores all icons and filenames to their default size.

xfsm Help Menu

xfsm Help Menu

The Help menu has the following options:

Click for Help

This option allows you to place your cursor anywhere in the window, usually on a button or a needed input area, and click the left mouse button to see the help card for that segment of the window or button.

Overview

This option starts up the help system at the overview card for this application.

Topics

There are a number of topical options, each one representing a help card on the listed topic.

Index

This option opens an index of the help information topics and subtopics available for this application.

Product Info

This option brings up a help card containing general information about this application.

xfsm current host display

xfsm current host display

The area directly beneath the menu bar displays the name of the current host, as shown in Figure 3-2:

Figure 3-2. xfsm Current Host Display

Figure 3-2 xfsm Current Host Display

You can change the current host by selecting the “Search...” option from the View menu as described in “xfsm View Menu and Buttons”.

xfsm Display Area

The display area is the main part of the xfsm window. In this area, icons and the mount point pathnames of each disk on the selected host system are displayed. To select a filesystem, click it once. The icon changes color to show the filesystem has been selected. Once a filesystem is selected, you can perform operations on that filesystem.
