Chapter 1. Web Control Panel Tasks

This chapter discusses how to perform various tasks using Web Control Panel. It contains the following sections:

Overview of Web Control Panel

You use Web Control Panel to set or override your Silicon Graphics web browser and network properties for accessing the World Wide Web from a number of Silicon Graphics applications.

These include Desktop, File Manager, Software Manager, System Manager, System Setup, InfoSearch, SGIHelp, and Out of Box Experience. Web Control Panel allows you to gain web access without using Netscape.

Web Control Panel controls and customizes your Silicon Graphics web browser (history and JavaScript behavior). It adjusts the cache and connection control for the web support library, and overrides the proxy and socks information setup in your Netscape browser.

Web Control Panel also controls your SGI web browser settings for history and caching, enabling or disabling JavaScript and managing simultaneous web connections.

Your SGI web browser will use your Netscape preferences if you do not set up Web Control Panel. However, once you set your Web Control Panel preferences, your SGI web browser will use these settings instead of the default Nescape settings.

You access Web Control Panel from the Icon Catalog in the Toolchest (click Find > Control Panels, then choose the Web Control icon), or type webcontrol from the command line in your shell window.

Saving and Exiting

You must save your changes before exiting Web Control Panel. If you exit after saving, a dialog box appears saying:

“Changes made in this control panel will not take effect until you restart the applications that use the web viewer and the web support packages. These include InfoSearch, System Manager, Software Manager, Desktop, System Setup, and Out of Box Experience.”

You must therefore restart any of these applications for your Web Control Panel changes to take effect.
