Troubleshooting Tips

A few words of general troubleshooting advice.

Restarting

If strange or unexpected software behavior ever occurs, you may find that it disappears after restarting your system. However, avoid restarting by using the "reboot" button on your workstation--this button should be used only when necessary. Instead, try logging out and back in if that is possible. Otherwise, choose System > Restart System from the Toolchest, which ensures that all data is preserved and that any remote users are alerted before the system shuts down. You should also use the Restart System command prudently because restarting (also called "rebooting") causes extra wear and tear on the disk drive and memory chips.

"Unsticking" the Mouse Cursor

When the mouse cursor appears to be stuck, try pressing the Esc key to release it.

Bringing Back the Toolchest

If you accidentally close the Toolchest, you can bring it up again by typing toolchest& in a shell and then pressing the Enter key. Or, log out and then log back in.
