Cannot Communicate with the Network

Your system cannot send or receive information over the network. To correct the problem, follow these steps:

  1. Check your physical connection to the network; the Ethernet cable may be loose or disconnected. For detailed instructions on connecting the cable see your Owners Guide. Note: you do not need to shut down the system to connect or disconnect the cable. To verify your network connection is working:

    • Open a shell window by going to the Toolchest and selecting “Desktop” and “Open Unix Shell.”

    • Type /usr/etc/ping hostname where hostname is a host that is known to be up and working on the network.

    • You should see one line of output for each second if the host is reachable.

    • Terminate the ping program by typing ^C (control “C”.)

  2. If you do not get any output, see the “Troubleshooting” chapter in the online Personal System Administration Guide for detailed instructions on troubleshooting network problems.
